Served in the Great War and presided over the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. Converted from battlecruiser to aircraft carrier under the 1922 treaty. Hunted Graf Spee in the Indian Ocean and supported British forces in Norway. Slain by Scharnhorst on 8 June 1940 in Operation Juno.
