Despite not being an attack submarine, she made the first US wartime approach on enemy naval forces following Pearl Harbor. Her sinking in 1943 remains the worst wartime loss of life for a US submarine. Her bell was given to the Submarine Memorial Chapel before this, and rings there to this day.
