Personality and traits
People avoid her as much as they can because they consider her unlucky and are afraid that being around her will cause them to get into trouble too. As a result of this she is very self-deprecating and unconfident, just living with her reputation of unluckiness as an unchangeable fact. She has a fondness for the German raspberry-based dessert Errötende Jungfrau (usually translated into English as "blushing maid").
Tombstone quotes
Heroic | She never surrendered to the roll of the dice. |
Tragic | Unlucky after all, but braver than she knew. |
Character Trivia
- She has no direct sister ships currently, but she has half-sisters in Theodor Riedel and Hans Lody of the Type 1934A subclass.
- She tries her hand at baking, even if she isn't very good at it starting off, and makes a cake for her captain.

Fate | Sunk |
- Like all Type 1934 destroyers, she was named after German naval officers who died fighting in World War I. Z1 was given the name of Konteradmiral Leberecht Maass, who commanded the German forces at the Battle of Heligoland Bight and died when his flagship the light cruiser SMS Cöln was sunk by British battlecruisers[1].
- Type 1934 destroyers had some serious design flaws, presumably because they were the first ships designed by Germany after disarmament after a long period with a lack of design experience. Their steep bows that lacked flare, the staukeil short keel, and short forecastle caused poor stability and seakeeping with the bow plowing deep into the water and causing spray thrown over into the bridge so much to the point that No. 1 turret was unusable and the forward deck was dangerous to anyone to be on. The high-pressure boilers they used were also innovative but highly unreliable throughout the entire service lives of these ships [2].
- On the opening of WWII when Nazi Germany attacked Poland, Z1 was present and was sent to attack the Polish naval base at Hel alongside fellow German destroyers. Upon arriving she faced off against Polish Navy ships and coastal batteries. German fire was ineffective while the Polish shot better, causing Leberecht Maass to take a hit from a 152mm coastal gun which knocked out her No. 2 turret and then later retreat to be repaired at Swinemünde.
- In a gross failure of interservice communication, Z1 Leberecht Maass was a participant in Operation Wikinger, a Kriegsmarine operation to hunt down and destroy British trawlers who they falsely believed were supporting British submarines. The Luftwaffe who was performing anti-shipping duties in the same area was not informed of the presence of Kreigsmarine there and neither was the Kriegsmarine informed of German aircraft. Eventually when the group of destroyers Leberecht Maass was a part of and flight of Heinkel He 111 bombers spotted each other, they assumed each other to be hostile and began fighting. Leberecht Maass was hit amidships by a bomb which badly damaged her, and a follow-up bombing run hit her with a further two bombs which caused a massive explosion leaving the unlucky ship to sink. While attempting to rescue crew from Leberecht Maass her sister ship Z3 Max Schultz struck a British mine and exploded so hard she broke up and sank, causing the remaining destroyers to retreat. with two destroyers lost and 606 people dead, the day was a huge embarrassment for the Kriegsmarine and Nazi Germany [3].
